Barishal is renowned as the "Land of Paddy, Rivers, and Canals." King Danujmardan developed this independent nation referred to as "Chandradwip" during the period of Muslim dominance over south-east Bengal. Chandradwip was the given name to the region until the end of the fourteenth century. The region under question was referred to as "Bakla" before the the establishment of this state. The vicinity was previously referred to as Bakla-Chandradwip until 1796. In 1797, Bakerganj district evolved as the southern portion of Dhaka district. The administration hub for the Bakerganj district was relocated to Barisal (Girde Port) in 1801. There were a total of 15 police stations in the region in 1812.
As per the Bangladesh Census of 2022 in Barisal Division, there were 93,25,818 population The population density was 705 people per km2. The vast majority of Muslims were developed by a subsequent arrival of Muslims from other regions, the wholesale conversion of certain Muslims, and the large flight of Hindus. The people who live in this area are decedents of a traditional human culture. Bengal's granary, Barishal, was formerly referred to as "Agricultural Manchester." There was present a connection among the economic systems of Bengal with Barihsal. It refers to "Sujla-Sufla-Shasya-Shyamla." One of the parts of the Gangetic delta region that is abundant in rivers, canals, woods, and natural diversity is Barishal.
There are now six districts in this division as a whole. Barishal, Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Barguna, and Jhalokati are the districts. The Barishal Division's administrative centre is situated in the significant district of Barishal in southern Bangladesh.

২০২২ খ্রিস্টাদের আদমশুমারি অনুসারে বরিশাল বিভাগের বর্তমান জনসংখ্যা প্রায় ৯৩,২৫৮১৮ জন এবং প্রতি বর্গ কিলোমিটারে জনসংখ্যার ঘনত্ব ৭০৫ জন। জনসংখ্যার বড় অংশ মুসলিম। ঐতিহ্য ও লোকজ সংস্কৃতি সাথে এ অঞ্চলের জনগন ওতপ্রোত ভাবে জড়িত। বাংলার শস্য ভান্ডার বরিশাল একদা ‘এগ্রিকালচারাল ম্যানচেস্টার' হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিল। বরিশালের অর্থনীতির সাথে সম্পৃক্ত ছিল বাংলার অর্থনীতি। সুজলা-সুফলা-শস্য-শ্যামলা এ অঞ্চল প্রাচীনকাল থেকে দিয়ে এসেছে অফুরন্ত ধন-সম্পদ আর সীমাহীন প্রাচুর্য। প্রচুর নদী, খাল, কাঠ, প্রাকৃতিক বৈচিত্র্যে সমৃদ্ধ বৃহত্তর ব-দ্বীপের এই বরিশাল অঞ্চল।
বরিশাল বিভাগে বর্তমানে ছয়টি জেলা রয়েছে, জেলাগুলো বরিশাল, পটুয়াখালী, ভোলা, পিরোজপুর, বরগুনা ও ঝালকাঠী। বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিনে অবস্থিত বরিশাল বিভাগের বিভাগীয় কার্যালয় বরিশাল জেলায় অবস্থিত।
খাদ্য: বরিশাল অঞ্চলের জনগণ সত্যিকার অর্থে ভোজন বিলাসী। পারিবারিকভাবে এরা খুবই ঘনিষ্ঠ ও আন্তরিক। তেলে-ঝালে রকমারী সুস্বাদু খাবারের পরে একটা মিষ্টান্ন ছাড়া তাদের তৃপ্তি আসে না। এখানে খেজুরের রস, গুড়, নারিকেল, দুধের তৈরি পিঠার প্রকার প্রায় শতকের কাছাকাছি।
গান ও নৃত্য: রয়ানি, বিয়ের গান, পালাগান, পার্বন গান, ভাটিয়ালি, রাখালি, মুর্শিদি, জারি, সারি এ অঞ্চলের ঐতিহ্যবাহী গান এছাড়া কবিগান পরিবেশন, যাত্রা প্রভৃতি বরিশালের ঐতিহ্য।
স্থাপত্য: বরিশালের বিভিন্ন জেলায় ঐতিহাসিক মসজিদ, মন্দির ও প্রাচীন স্থাপত্য রয়েছে। বাগেরহাটে পীর খান জাহান আলী কর্তৃক নির্মিত ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদের নকশা ও স্থাপত্য শৈলি বিশেষ উল্লেখযোগ্য।
পর্যটন কেন্দ্র: কুয়াকাটা সমুদ্র সৈকত মাধব পাশার দুর্গাসাগর দিঘী, উজিরপুরে গুঠিয়া বায়তুল আমান মসজিদ, বাউফলের কমলা রানী দিঘী, দূর্গা সাগর, চাখারে শেরে বাংলা এ. কে. ফজলুল হক জাদুঘর, বরগুনার সোনার চর বরিশালের উল্লেখ্যযোগ্য দর্শনীয় স্থান।
