Khulna is a division Bay of Bengal. Bagerhat is located to the east, Jessore and Narail are located to the north, Satkhira is located to the west, and the Bay of Bengal and Sundarbans are located to the south. The district is rectangular in design and is long and square in shape. It was previously affiliated with Jessore but became a separate district in 1882 AD. This area was highly forested in the past. Most districts of Khulna are island-like, surrounded by several rivers and canals. People's lives and cultures in this region are distinct from those in other parts of Bangladesh.
There are numerous stories on Khulna's naming. According to others, Khulna comes from the word 'Khullnaba'. A location where small boats or small boats float. The origin of the name Khulna is the subject of numerous local tales. Dhanpati Saudagar with his wives, Khullana and Lahna. Khullana was the most religious of them all. Dhanpati Saudagar erected a Kali shrine in his honor. This temple is called Khullaneswari Kali Mandir after Khullana. The name Khulna is taken from the temple's name. Many believe that the name Khulna is derived from the goddess's 'Kholana' warning. This region's history tradition dates back thousands of years.
Although it arose comparatively later from the water, it, like many other areas in the subcontinent, was populated in ancient times. Then, as culture, civilization, and politics advanced, it became identified with the history of greater towns across the country. Buran Dwip was the district's original name.
Khulna division is rich in folk literature and culture due to its old sites and antiquities. Folk literature, folk music, folk musical instruments, folk festivals, folk fairs, folklore, folk drama, folk medicine, riddles, folk sports, proverbs, and folk techniques are examples of folk cultures. By preserving these traditional cultures, the inhabitants of this region have passed down their identity from generation to generation.
খুলনা বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমাঞ্চলের অন্যতম বিভাগ। দেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম কোণে বঙ্গোপসাগরের কূল জুড়ে এর অবস্থান। পূর্বে বাগেরহাট, উত্তরে যশোর ও নড়াইল, পশ্চিমে সাতক্ষীরা এবং দক্ষিণে বঙ্গোপসাগর ও সুন্দরবন। জেলার আকার লম্বা ও চৌকো আকৃতির। পূর্বে এটি যশোরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকলেও ১৮৮২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পৃথক জেলা হিসেবে যাত্রা শুরু করে। প্রাচীনকালে এ এলাকা ছিল ঘন বনাচ্ছাদিত। অসংখ্য নদী ও খালবেষ্টিত খুলনার অধিকাংশ এলাকা দ্বীপাঞ্চল সদৃশ। এখানকার জনজীবন ও সংস্কৃতি বাংলাদেশের অন্য অঞ্চল থেকে ভিন্ন ও স্বকীয় বৈশিষ্ট্যে ভরপুর।
খুলনার নামকরণ নিয়ে নানা কথা প্রচলিত। কারো মতে, খুলনা এসছে ‘খুল্লনাবা’ শব্দ থেকে। অর্থ ক্ষুদ্র নৌকা বা ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র নৌকা ভাসে এমন স্থান। খুলনা নামের উৎপত্তি সম্পর্কে স্থানীয়ভাবে কিছু কিছু কিংবদন্তিও চালু রয়েছে। ধনপতি সওদাগর ও তাঁর স্ত্রী-লহনা ও খুল্লনা। এর মধ্যে খুল্লনা খুব ধর্মপরায়ণা ছিলেন। তার জন্য ধনপতি সওদাগর একটি কালী মন্দির নির্মাণ করে দেন। খুল্লনার নামানুসারে এ মন্দিরে নাম হয় খুল্লনেশ্বরী কালী মন্দির। এই মন্দিরের নামানুসারে খুলনা নামের উৎপত্তি। অনেকের মতে দেবী কর্তৃক উচ্চারিত ‘খোলানা’ সতর্কবাণী থেকে খুলনা শব্দটি এসেছে। এ অঞ্চলের ইতিহাস ঐতিহ্য সুদূর অতীতে প্রসারিত।
সমুদ্র গর্ভ থেকে অপেক্ষাকৃত পরে উত্থিত হলেও উপমহাদেশের অনেক স্থানের মতো এখানেও প্রাচীনকালে জনবসতি গড়ে ওঠে বলে জানা যায়। এরপর ধীরে ধীরে সংস্কৃতি, সভ্যতা এবং রাজনৈতিক বিকাশের সাথে সাথে এটা সারা দেশেরন বৃহত্তর জনপদের ইতিহাস-এতিহ্যের সাথে সম্পৃক্ত হয়ে পড়ে। খুলনা জেলার প্রাচীন নাম বুড়ন দ্বীপ।
খুলনা জেলার যেমন রয়েছে প্রাচীন নিদর্শনাদি ও প্রত্নসম্পদ তেমনি এ অঞ্চল নানা লোক-সাহিত্য, লোক-সংস্কৃতিতে ভরপুর। সেসব লোকজ সংস্কৃতির মধ্যে লোকসাহিত্য, লোকসংগীত, লোক বাদ্যযন্ত্র, লোক উৎসব, লোক মেলা, লোকাচার, লোক নাট্য, লোকচিকিৎসা, ধাঁধা, লোক ক্রিড়া, প্রবাদ-প্রবচন এবং লোকপ্রযুক্তি উল্লেখ যোগ্য। এসকল লোক সংস্কৃতিকে লালন করেই এ অঞ্চলের মানুষ তাদের স্বকীয়তা ধরে রেখেছে বছরের পর বছর, প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্ম।
